Steadfast Hearts, Service-Driven Practice: Meet Betsy Cracco
The t-shirts say it all: “May Our Hearts Be Steadfast, And Our Practice Be Of Service.” Since 2018, Betsy Cracco has been teaching yoga at Block 134 with this guiding intention—creating space through movement, breath, and mindfulness to reconnect with our true selves and remember that, at our core, we belong to one another.
Her classes are rooted in the belief that when we settle our nervous systems, we become better equipped to serve others. Peace within creates peace around us. Inspired by her mentor Rolf Gates and the wisdom of the Block 134 community, Betsy’s teaching invites students to move beyond their stories and into the heart.
This heart-centered approach also shapes the “business model” of her classes. In 2019, shortly after she began teaching, Betsy’s brother Joe was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, proceeds from her classes have been donated to cancer charities—primarily Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where Joe received a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Under the banner of Team Joe, Block yogis have contributed thousands of dollars, turning practice into purpose.
Beyond the mat, Betsy is passionate about the power of mind-body practices to support mental health and build meaningful community. Teaching at Block allows her to serve the local community she loves. During the week, she serves as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Life and Wellbeing at UMass Amherst, bringing over 35 years of experience as a psychologist and higher education leader. Locally, she’s also a dedicated swimmer and a founding member of the Kitty Krew Women’s Cycling Group.Connect with Betsy:
